Learn More About Groups Across India Empowering Girls
More than 40,000 girls are currently participating in the Girls Project, a partnership between the government of West Bengal and the non-profit Landesa. Participating girls learn intensive gardening skills so they can grow vegetables on their parents’ homestead. The food they grow supplements their family’s diet or can be sold at market to raise funds for school fees, allowing the girl to prove her worth in tangible ways. Participants are more likely to continue their studies, to have an asset in their name, less likely to become a child bride, and positioned to understand their rights to land. The program is being scaled to reach one million girls and costs on average only 60 Indian Ruppees/$1 US per girl.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a major inter-ministerial initiative of the government of India bringing together ministries/institutions/civil societies in a rational effort to reverse the declining sex ratio led by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The national campaign envisaged to ensure girls are born, loved and nurtured without discrimination, educated and raised to become empowered citizens of this country with equal rights.
